HUDSON STRAITS UMIAK
This umiak was built from a draqwing in Adney & Chappelle's "The Bark Canoes and Skinboats of North America" (1964:188, fig. 172). The original is not a collected example (there isn't an 'original')-- the drawing was made from a model as well as detailed measurements of a particular boat. The 'replica' measures 24'7-1/4" long, 5'8-3/8" wide, and 22-1/2" deep. My umiak is made from Southern Yellow Pine, and weighs about 300#. It was launched with 12 people on board (+-1600#), and had room for several more and lots of gear.
